Welcome to the Doctoral Program in Counseling Psychology at Louisiana Tech University. The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Counseling Psychology is accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) and embodies a balanced training experience designed to train professional psychologists in the scientist-practitioner model. The primary goal of the program is to produce professional psychologists who are competent in both research and professional practice.

Our Counseling Psychology program trains students as Health Service Psychologists qualified to work in a variety of professional settings including university counseling centers, Veterans Administration (VA) treatment facilities, community health agencies, private practice, and academia.  Our faculty and students provide rural mental health services to the community via our department-run Psychological Services Clinic and complete subsequent practica in diverse settings with diverse populations.

Program Summary and Residency Requirements

The program employs a cohort model that typically requires on average four academic years in residence (with a minimum of three years of residence), not including the one-year full-time pre-doctoral psychology internship. The doctoral degree must be completed within seven years of admission to the program. The standard curriculum and course sequence are designed to span four academic years, with a fifth year on internship. Students who enter the program with a relevant master’s degree (e.g., counseling psychology, clinical mental health) may apply to transfer some coursework, at the discretion of the Core Counseling Psychology Faculty (training committee). However, transfer credits typically reduce the course load in some academic terms, but do not reduce the length of the program. Once students complete all coursework, they are eligible to complete their pre-doctoral psychology internship.  Of note, no student has completed fewer than four academic years of training and coursework prior to internship in the past 10 years.  Further, information about the program and requirements can be found in the program handbook.
